Theodorakopoulos and Baras: on Trust Models and Trust Evaluation Metrics for Ad-hoc Networks

چکیده

Within the realm of network security, we interpret the concept of trust as a relation among entities that participate in various protocols. Trust relations are based on evidence created by the previous interactions of entities within a protocol. In this work, we are focusing on the evaluation of trust evidence in Ad Hoc Networks. Because of the dynamic nature of Ad Hoc Networks, trust evidence may be uncertain and incomplete. Also, no pre-established infrastructure can be assumed. The evaluation process is modeled as a path problem on a directed graph, where nodes represent entities, and edges represent trust relations. We give intuitive requirements and discuss design issues for any trust evaluation algorithm. Using the theory of semirings, we show how two nodes can establish an indirect trust relation without previous direct interaction. We show that our semiring framework is flexible enough to express other trust models, most notably PGP’s Web of Trust. Our scheme is shown to be robust in the presence of attackers.

On Trust Establishment in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

We present some properties of trust establishment in mobile, ad-hoc networks and illustrate how they differ from those of trust establishment in the Internet. We motivate these differences by providing an example of ad-hoc network use in battlefield scenarios, yet equally practical examples can be found in non-military environments. We argue that peer-to-peer networks are especially suitable to...

Distributed Trust Establishment in MANET’s: Swarm Intelligence

We present some properties of trust establishment in mobile, ad-hoc networks and illustrate how they differ from those of trust establishment in the Internet. We present a framework for trust establishment in mobile ad-hoc networks and argue that peer-to-peer networks are especially suitable to solve the problems of generation, distribution, and discovery of trust evidence in mobile ad-hoc netw...

Trust Modeling and Evaluation

The performance of ad hoc networks depends on the cooperative and trust nature of the distributed nodes. To enhance security in ad hoc networks, it is important to evaluate the trustworthiness of other nodes without centralized authorities. In this paper, we present an information theoretic framework to quantitatively measure trust and model trust propagation in ad hoc networks. In the proposed...

Distributed Trust Management in Wireless Autonomic Networks

As an important concept in network security, trust is interpreted as a set of relations among agents participating in the network activities. Trust relations are based on previous behaviors of agents as well as on trust documents. We present our results on distributed trust management in MANET. The trust information or evidence used to evaluate trustworthiness is provided by peers, i.e. the age...
